The Flying Horse
COMMERCIAL PROJECT
The brief for The Flying Horse public house in Boughton Aluph was to create rooms to let above the thriving pub below. Previously staff quarters, the rooms were tatty and tired. Some structural work was required to make each of the 4 rooms ensuite – and each now has a generous ensuite bathroom. The inspiration for the design was taken from the location – opposite the village cricket pitch and very much a country pub. The look needed to be traditional without being fussy or chintzy.
The refurbished bedrooms are restful and welcoming – with a very simple, clean design. A fresh off white paint colour was chosen to give an airy, calm feel to the bedrooms. Character would be added by using antique (and often mis-matched!) wood furniture for bedsides and wardrobes. Colour was added in beautiful, bespoke window dressings and cushions to dress the bed. I added texture in bedside lamps and blankets. The overall colour scheme was very traditional – using sage green and terracotta reds in 3 of the bedrooms and in the smallest bedroom a fresh pale blue combined with warm neutrals.
A themed cricket wallpaper was used in the communal corridors between the bedrooms as well as in the dining room downstairs (a nod to the cricket pitch outside as well as a quirky feature).
